A very subtle eclipse of the Moon

Watch out for a Moonrise with a subtle difference this evening as our satellite undergoes a penumbral eclipse. This observation sees the Moon enter Earth’s outer shadow, sadly missing the deeper umbra and denying us a total or even partial lunar eclipse.

The penumbral eclipse which reaches its maximum at 7:55pm BST (18:55 UT) will occur in bright twilight so nothing different about the lunar orb is likely to be seen from the UK. At most, the upper limb of the Moon nearest the Earth’s umbral shadow (but not immersed in it) may appear slightly dimmer.
