Tim Peake and space station crew mates return to Earth

A powerful Proton booster launched at 0931:42 GMT Monday with the first part of a multibillion-dollar Mars mission led by the European Space Agency. The Mars orbiter and lander will search for signs of methane on the red planet, and demonstrate technologies to be used on a future European Mars rover.

A European-built orbiter designed to seek out the source of methane on Mars slipped into orbit around the red planet Wednesday after a seven-month interplanetary journey, but mission control lost contact with an experimental landing probe just before touchdown.

Research just published in Nature describes two bright, extremely high-altitude plumes observed on Mars by amateur astronomers in March and April 2012, but attempts at explaining the phenomena defy our current understanding of the Martian upper atmosphere.
