This breathtaking image of the Northern Lights over Norway’s Lofoten Islands taken by Nicolai Brügger has won the top prize in the aurorae category of the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2019 competition.
The photographer hiked in the snow to the top of the mountain Offersøykammen in Norway, to witness and capture the breathtaking giant aurora over the islands. He waited many hours and after midnight the bright Northern Lights finally appeared. Nicolai shot this on 9 March 2018 using a Nikon D600 camera (15 mm f/2.8 lens, ISO 2000, 12 x 13-second exposures).
The Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year is now in its eleventh year and this year received a record number of over 4,600 entries. The winning images, runners-up and those highly commended – are showcased alongside a remarkable selection of 68 shortlisted images in the exhibition which runs until 26 April 2020.
