Astronomers discover ‘heavy metal’ supernova rocking out

Many rock stars don’t like to play by the rules, and a cosmic one is no exception. A team of astronomers has discovered that an extraordinarily bright supernova occurred in a surprising location. This “heavy metal” supernova discovery challenges current ideas of how and where such super-charged supernovas occur.

Parkes Observatory detects first ‘live’ fast radio burst

Having developed a technique to search for real-time ‘fast radio bursts,’ a team of astronomers in Australia has succeeded in observing the first ‘live’ burst with the Parkes telescope from a source up to 5.5 billion light-years from Earth.

Ground-based detection of super-Earth transit

A team of astronomers has measured the passing of a super-Earth in front of a bright, nearby Sun-like star using a ground-based telescope for the first time. Exoplanet 55 Cancri e, some 40 light-years away, is about twice as big and eight times as massive as the Earth.
