The path of totality of a solar eclipse touched the European Southern Observatory’s La Silla Observatory on 2 July 2019. This rare astronomical event occurred as the observatory, on the summit of the Chilean mountain Cinchado-North in the outskirts of the Atacama desert, celebrated its 50th year of operation. One thousand visitors, including the President of the Republic of Chile, journeyed to the remote observatory to witness the unique conjunction.
The eclipse lasted roughly two and a half hours, with almost two minutes of totality at 20:39 UT, and was visible across a narrow band of Chile and Argentina.
