The image has been processed to bring out the details of the comet’s activity. In this orientation the comet’s small lobe is to the top left, while the large lobe is to the bottom right.

The transition between the Seth and Anubis regions on the large lobe is quite prominent, with a distinct ridge separating the numerous quasi-circular depressions in Seth (left) from the smoother surface of Anubis (right).

If it were possible to breath in space, one would smell a pungent aroma of rotten eggs, ammonia, vinegary sulphur dioxide and toxic hydrogen cyanide coming from comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, according to sensors on the Rosetta mission.

Herschel’s view of the Eagle Nebula

The Eagle Nebula, also known as Messier 16 (M16), as seen by ESA’s Herschel Space Observatory. A group of young, bright stars, not visible at these infrared wavelengths, are located near the centre of the image. The powerful light emitted by these stars is setting the surrounding gas ablaze, causing it to shine.
